Originally a classical music station, WBCN (the call letters originally stood for Boston Concert Network) switched to an "underground' rock format in the late 1960s. In 1968, Peter Wolf, who went on to front the J. Geils Band, worked as a WBCN disc jockey, using the nickname "Wolfa Goofa."
