1998. 'Saving Private Ryan'
"Saving Private Ryan" won the 1999 Academy Award for best director (Steven Spielberg), and Ebert gave kudos to the man behind the camera for making his characters "ordinary" and using action, rather than words, to convey his philosophy.
"I like the fact that Tom Hanks' squad is not made into zany characters, that many of them are played close to the bone as ordinary people and that's very effective, I think.
"You know, Gene, one of the things I admired most about the movie was the way Spielberg buries his philosophy in action."
