"Louie" is coming back for a fourth season. But: Not until the spring of 2014. Today, Louis C.K. told the press in a conference call that he doesn't want to force his creativity: "I don't want it to be making the doughnuts."
A number of cable shows, most notably HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm," have had irregular breaks during their runs."The last three seasons have been this surge of fun and work and stories," C.K. said. "It's been great to share all this stuff, but I want to keep going. I want the show to keep getting better."
Yes, it's a little bit of a bummer. But I'm glad C.K., who won a pair of Emmys this year, is holding out for quality. The relentlessness of the TV series paradigm in the United States often takes it toll on freshness. I admired the last season of "Louie," but I could feel him straining for material by the end of the 13-episode run. Pity the poor network writers on popular shows such as "Modern Family" who have to churn out some 22 episodes every year. We rave about the British version of "The Office," but we forget that part of what enabled Ricky Gervais to perfect it was that each season was only six episodes, with a special two-hour finale episode.
Louie, bring it when you're ready to bring it, and not a moment sooner.
