This cop ‘Chase’ is by the book
‘We’re all creatures of habit,’’ declares one US marshal when describing how to capture fugitives in “Chase,’’ premiering tonight at 10 on Channel 7.
Just as criminals can’t help but head back to old haunts, mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer (the “CSI’’ franchise “Cold Case’’) uses familiar tactics in this slickly shot, breathlessly paced, formulaically plotted action drama.
The “Chase’’ cast is led by a believably rough-and-tumble Kelli Giddish as Annie Frost, a woman driven to nail bad guys because of her own dad’s bad-guy past. The ice-cool Frost can mix it up with dope slingers and con men but is, of course, kindhearted when it comes to kids.
That viewers of previous crime shows will likely be able to anticipate the moves of Frost and her telegenic team — including roguish charmer Cole Hauser as her partner Jimmy and “Desperate Housewives’’ lawn boy Jesse Metcalfe as an eager newbie — may not be a bad thing from a TV-crime-procedurals-as-comfort-food standpoint. But in the pursuit of an original take on an old format, “Chase’’ lags behind.
