Five young artists to watch
Zach Horn, 28Painter
Horn's abstract paintings originated in drawings he made in nature. The works cascade with rapturous color and bristle with texture. "I work in two opposite ways and let them meet," Horn says. "I make very realistic drawings in the landscape, and then grow the painting out of that experience."
While at BU, Horn traveled to Tiputini Biodiversity Station in Ecuador, where he rose before dawn to go into the jungle to draw. "I was forcing myself to sit and look," he says. "The drawings are an act of looking. I don't want the paintings to be about what is observed, but about what is felt."
