It is the great composer's birthday today and I'm glad. It feels as if we've been talking about Elliott Carter turning 100 for so long that it seemed he must have reached the milestone two or three years ago. What did I do on Carter's big day? Worked 10 hours on a UPS truck. Don't ask. But here we are, the night of the birthday, and there's reason to celebrate.
At the Carter Centenary Page, we get a bio, press clippings and other assorted materials. Nonesuch, his record label, offers its own wishes. Other coverage in Newsweek, the Australian, the Guardian and from Alex Ross.
After today, we can start the great countdown to May 10, 2016. That date? When Milton Babbitt turns 100!
