I stopped by the Institute of Contemporary Art and, once again, the glass elevator was out of service. The explanation from Donna Desrochers, the museum's communications and marketing director:
The elevator was designed to have a glass door. But design flaws prevented the ICA from installing that door last year. So instead, the ICA put in a metal door. Trouble is, the metal door is much heavier.
"With the doors opening and closing frequently over the busy holiday period it put an extra demand on the pumps and everything else associated with making the doors open and shut. The elevator requires a special hydraulic fuel which will be applied to the parts and it should be operating again shortly (the museum is closed Mondays). We are eager for the door to be replaced with an all-glass door which should eliminate such problems in the future. The
door is scheduled to be replaced in March."
