“An American in London: Whistler and the Thames,” at the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, traces the development of Whistler’s responses to the river Thames over the course of four decades. The show, which was organized by renowned Whistler experts Margaret MacDonald and Patricia de Montfort from the University of Glasgow, comes to Massachusetts in slightly stripped down form from London, where it was on display at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. It will travel to the Freer Gallery of Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., over the summer. It’s a wonderful show. Don’t miss it.
