Guy Mendilow
Guy Mendilow (left) played hopscotch as a kid -- between countries and continents. He grew up in Israel, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, and New Jersey. ''Everybody in my immediate family has a different accent," he says. His musical style reflects his peripatetic life. In the afternoon, Mendilow will perform solo, putting his traveler's spin on traditional Israeli folk songs. In the evening, the singer and his band will perform. He plays the Brazilian berimbau -- a wire on a spare tire, played with a stone and a stick. He performs overtone singing, producing two tones at once. The music blends styles from many different cultures. ''Music is a lot like storytelling," Mendilow says. ''Each story is a scene from somewhere else."
