Chu Ling Dance: Between East and West
Many of the children of Chinese descent in Boston don't speak Chinese, but they are learning about Chinese culture in dance class. Chu Ling (below), a Chinese choreographer who came to Boston from her homeland in 1998, teaches more than 60 students, ages 4 to 25, the intricacies of classical Chinese dance. A group of them will perform the ancient, martial-arts based sword dance, a fan dance, and a more contemporary piece about Asian-American identity. ''We all have this question inside: Am I American, or am I Chinese?" Chu Ling says. Her dances embrace both.
Where and when: Hynes Convention Center, room 306, 1:50-2:20 p.m., 3:05-3:25 p.m., 4:20-4:40 p.m.
