First Night 2005 Performers
Gamelan Galak Tikka: Balinese music and dance
Percussive and hypnotizing, the Gamelan Galak Tikka is an orchestra of traditional Balinese instruments, including gongs, drums, cymbals, flutes, and metal instruments resembling xylophones. "The music has wafted its way into Western consciousness for the last 100 years," points out the group's founder, Evan Ziporyn (above). You can hear it in the music of Debussy, for instance, and in that of more contemporary composers like Steve Reich. Balinese music, both traditional and contemporary, is rhythmic, virtuosic, syncopated, lyrical, and fluid, and it always accompanies a dance performance. The highlight on First Night will be a performance of work by Balinese composer Dewa Ketut Alit.
Where and when: Hynes Convention Center, Room 112. 8-8:45 p.m., 9:15-10 p.m.
