First Night 2005 Performers
Everyone always told her she should be a comedian, but Tissa Hami (left) thought she should have a proper career instead. Then came Sept. 11, 2001. The negative images of Muslims in the media, especially the recurring image of oppressed Muslim women, got under Hami's skin. So, in full Islamic hijab, she got up onstage and started making jokes about it all. She pokes fun at airport security and does a takeoff on Adam Sandler's "Hanukkah" song, called "Ramadan." "I have a joke about harems," Hami says. "What if the joke is on the guy, and they're really a bunch of lesbians?"
