Estrellas Tropicales
The baton-twirling, pompom-shaking, flag-waving phenomenon that is Estrellas Tropicales started 30 years ago when founder Felicita Ryola took her two granddaughters and a friend to the Puerto Rican Day Parade in the South End to march and twirl. The girls had been born in Puerto Rico, where nearly every city has a baton-twirling group. Today, Ryola, 80, still runs the show. The twirlers have since grown to 160 participants. About 70 of the group's best twirlers will march in First Night's Grand Procession.
Where and when: Grand Procession 5:30 to 7 p.m., Boylston and Charles streets.
