The 2011 Newport Jazz Festival is all about Esperanza Spalding
The Newport Jazz Festival should be renamed the Esperanza Spalding Jazz Festival.
Fresh off winning the Grammy for best new artist, the jazz bassist and vocalist is set to be the big attraction at the annual jazz festival in Rhode Island, the premier event of its kind in the United States. At the ripe old age of 26, the Berklee College of Music graduate and instructor will be playing the Newport fest for the fourth time.
The festival -- which also has a new sponsor, the jewelry maker Alex and Ani -- takes place Aug. 5-7. Ticket information is available at www.newportjazzfest.net.
