Bello on Bulger: The plight of the prospective jurors

One week ago, there were 800 possible jurors in the pool of people being considered for Whitey Bulger's trial – now there are 70, said Mike Bello this morning. Each person is examined at length by the defense, the prosecution, and the judge, in an attempt to find the right people to sit on the jury.

It turned out that 13 of the 70 had some sort of criminal record, said Bello. One woman claimed she couldn't serve because of her swollen ankels, while another insisted she needed to babysit her dog. Another man was excused by the defense after Bulger intimated the man's large family and autistic child should be his priority.

Bello reports that the jury pool could be finalized by the end of the day, and opening statements are still slated for tomorrow.
