Boston Globe deputy metro editor Mike Bello reported this morning that Judge Diane Casper has asked for nearly 100 additional prospective jurors, bringing the count to 770 people who could be considered to serve on the jury for Whitey Bulger's trial.

From that pool, the court will narrow the number to 40, and from there, assign 18 people to serve, said Bello.

Bulger has been present throughout the jury selection process, now entering its fourth day. Observers have said that he carried himself with confidence and is seemingly very involved in his defense.

Defense attorneys for Bulger have come under fire, however, for attempting to ban Globe reporters Shelley Murphy and Kevin Cullen from the trial. The prosecution maintains that this is simply an attempt by Bulger to remove people he "despises" from his trial.

Listen to Mike Bello's assessment of the pre-trial situation.
