Dr. Dre’s album “The Chronic’’ will have reached the age of majority this December. Eighteen years after that pioneering ode to smoking the sticky stuff, is an album single-mindedly devoted to the pleasures of marijuana anything to get buzzed about? Revisiting the same territory as his 2004 cult classic album “To tha X-treme,’’ Houston MC Devin offers the same batch of punch lines, extremely crude come-ons, and panegyrics to getting high and getting freaky as fans have come to expect, all to the echo-chamber beat of an array of synthesized blips and bleeps. And yet, something about Devin — his lackadaisical assurance, his Lil Wayne-esque gift of gab, his shamelessly un-progressive attitude toward women — is perversely charming. Old enough to be bitter, Devin is instead doubling down, as he lays out in the masterful “What I Be On’’: “I be gettin’ by/I be stayin’ focused/I be gettin’ high/I hardly get noticed/I be on my grind/I be on my hustle, y’all/I stay on my P’s and Q’s/my weed and brews.’’ Will 2010, at long last, be Devin’s year? (Out now)
