Kreators: Live Coverage

The Boston hip-hop scene is on a serious down cycle as live shows have virtually disappeared and there has been barely a trickle coming out of the new-release spigot. That's why it's good to see the latest joint from Kreators, one of Beantown's most underrated acts. The 18-track set is a good overview of the talents of XL, Jaysaun, Big Juan, and producer G-Squared. The MCs have a good interplay and they toss off rhymes that are hard-earned, witty, and well-intentioned. "Legacy" is a taut track where "violence and trouble" always seem to find the MCs and figuring out how to put one foot in front of the other without looking back is the only way out. "Dog Dayz" is a harrowing fever dream, and packs a punch. "Home" makes for a sharp homage to Boston and a roll call of the elements that keep local hip-hop on the ups. Some tracks could use some sharper beats and hooks, and there are times when they settle for easy rhymes instead of pushing for a crisper couplet. But guests EDO.G, Cappadonna, Krumbsnatcha, Guru, and Akrobatik help float the boat and make "Coverage" come alive.
