Of all of the bands that will be dressing up and performing the music of other bands tonight in the Boston Halloween tradition, there are no choices more obscure than Ruby Ridge performing as the Knife at tonight's The Pill 10th Annual Halloween Party at Great Scott. Comprised of married couple John and Callan Von Bittrich, Ruby Ridge have both the acumen and set-up to take on the arch-electronica of Swedish brother/sister duo, the Knife, best known for chipping away at rockist barriers with the breakthrough 2006 release Silent Shout.
Although they have only been making music as Ruby Ridge since the Summer of 2011, the Von Bittrichs have been flooding their Bandcamp page recently with self-produced EPs--including The Cold Preserves Us which was just released online last weekend, and August's Exolinguistics--a collection of songs which highlights the extreme's of Ruby Ridge's sound.
As a title-track, "Exolinguistics" harps on the retro-goth/industrial side of the duo's production style. "Love Under Will" offers a lighter, more-contemporary, ambient sound which makes the listen wonder just what will come next. In this case, it's "the Repairer of Reputations," a chewy/grimy percussion-popping track that will leave you looking for some vitamin C and much needed water.
"That's sort of the line we're looking to walk" says John Von Bittrich. "We both completely love a lot of modern minimal techno, bass music and ambient electronica, but we also love Factory Records and Psychic TV. I think if we can strike that balance completely as a synthesis instead of oscillating between the two we will have achieved all I want aesthetically."
According to John Von Bittrich, Ruby Ridge's recent works are record directly into a sampler using on PG-58 microphone. "The software thats available now is just incredible," says Von Bittrich about his band's ability to make their work sound tight, crisp and polished with just a few well-used tools. "There are no limits to what you can do with a program like Ableton or Acid (our weapons of choice)--especially once you add in soft synths, VSTs and live elements."
Note: this is not John Van Bittrich's first appearance at the Pill Halloween Party. He has performed in the past with the Perennials as the Libertines and the Strokes.
