Birthdays Goes to Japan

One of the benefits of being a one-man-band is that you can pack up your suitcase if opportunity knocks and take the traveling rock show on the road. That's exactly what Boston-based Samuel Yager will be doing later this month when he packs up his musical suitcase and heads over to Japan for 9 scheduled performances, and hopefully some additional DIY shows.

The funny thing is here is that Yager, who performs under the moniker Birthdays, literally plays out of a musical suitcase. "Yea it's a big red suitcase," says Yager. "With pedals and keyboards and samplers and loopers mounted in there. It looks kind of crazy but gets the job done."

For those interested in catching the electro/experimental-artist before he heads off to meet some not-uncertain adventure, Yager is also playing a show April 23rd with Gauntlet Hair at Great Scott and also on April 25th (which coincidentally is Birthday's birthday) with Dada Trash Collage and Dinnersss at Gay Gardens. You might, might, also be able to catch a copy of his forthcoming 7" "Sniff Dogs," but only if the ever-considerate gentleman breaks his tradition of not peddling his own records at local shows--instead encouraging music lovers to support traveling musicians. Yager is sure to sell a bento box full of records in Japan though, where if revelers have any good sense they will snatch up his abstract, shambolic, ever-looping sonic jewel-shards. "I'm really psyched and a little bit nervous--mostly about being vegan in Japan and trying to stay polite!"
