Nominees for the 52nd annual Grammy awards were announced tonight on a live, but snoozy, prime time special on CBS.
Beyonce leads the field with ten nominations and Taylor Swift follows closely behind with eight. The ladies will go head to head the in the three top categories Song, Record, and Album of the Year.
Quick take: Meh.
-Not a great year for mainstream pop and rock in the big categories. Lots of fun but weightless pop that runs the gamut from irresistible - Beyonce - to crazy-making - the Black Eyed Peas.
-No love to the year's big rock records from U2 and Green Day in the main categories and a surprise Album of the Year nod to DMB. ("Sound Effects" actually thought it was one of their best records in awhile, but it's still surprising given the past Grammy love to U2 and Green Day).
-Lots of "hey it's an old song but you did a new version of it and we love you" nominations: Hall and Oates, Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, Seal, John Fogerty.
-The Best New Artist category actually shows - for Grammy- a little spunk with the inclusion of folks like MGMT, Silversun Pickups, and the Ting Tings.
