Hillbillies finish working out the Kinks
Western Mass. tribute band readies its last gig
It was around lunchtime when the accordion kicked in. Dave Simons, the mustached leader of one of the world’s most unexpected Kinks tributes bands, sang the opening bars of “Sunny Afternoon.’’ The other members of the Muswell Hillbillies, ranging from high school kids to the 60-year-old drummer, played along. The group was rehearsing for their last show, a gig tonight at the Iron Horse in Northampton. That might sound strange for a band that’s played just six gigs, but the reason for stopping is purely practical.
