For the fourth year in a row, independent music retailers across the nation are banding together to remind music lovers of the unique pleasures of shopping in a brick-and-mortar location.

Record Store Day has grown like a 45 to a 33 since its debut in 2008, and musicians have really gotten on board, releasing special treats just for the day. This year’s list of items numbers more than 150, from 7-inch singles and picture discs to box sets and split singles.

Big Lady Gaga fan? Get a new version of “Born This Way’’ with her mug right on the vinyl. More of a classic rocker? Check out the 10-inch Springsteen is releasing, featuring live versions of “Racing in the Street’’ and “Gotta Get That Feeling.’’ Or if your tastes run into the punk/alt-rock camp, you might dig the split single of a classic Hüsker Dü track made over by Green Day.

While some stores will stock the special items, others will celebrate with massive sales or feature live in-store performances and autograph signings. And some — like the New England institution Newbury Comics chain — are doing all three.

Here’s a partial listing of some of the featured items, performances, and participating stores in Greater Boston and points beyond. For a more comprehensive list check out Make sure to give your store of choice a ring to see whether they have the particular goodie you’re seeking, as many are limited editions. Otherwise, shop ’til you drop!
