At the Middle East Upstairs tonight, it's Nashville's soft indie-rock-act Paper Rival, which is promoting a new disc called "Dialog" that should appeal to fans of Bright Eyes. Singer Jake Rolleston's voice is soft and dramatic, making Rival's music prime material for an angsty television soundtrack. If only "The O.C." was still on the air. Joining the act will be Mansions, the New Frontiers, and the Honorary Title. 8:30 p.m. $10. Middle East Upstairs, 472 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, 617-864-3278. www.mideastclub.com
