Mavis Staples won a Grammy for the first record she made with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, but it’s arguable that “One True Vine,” her second album with him, is even better. It’s also arguable that Tweedy’s name should be alongside hers on the album cover, because this reads like a true partnership, with Tweedy not only producing the record, but contributing songs written for Staples and playing most of the instruments behind her.
However that may be, “One True Vine” resonates with the spirit, and sometimes the sounds, of traditional black gospel while seamlessly combining old and new.
