"Conan the Barbarian"Review of the original: "Conan the bloody"
May 15, 1982, by John Engstrom
[It's] a long, grim, bloody epic that cost $2 million but looks grainy and cheap. As Conan, a musclebound thug in an imaginary prehistoric age, Arnold Schwarzenegger wears an assortment of furs, loincloths, and leather regalia and shows off his superhuman biceps and pectorals. He also slaughters many, many people in a variety of creatively vicious ways. Duke Callaghan's photography treats the violence a la Sam Peckinpah, often using slow motion and positioning the camera so that we can savor every skewering, slashing, and decapitation.
