There's a sequel to the Christmas classic "It's a Wonderful Life" in the works, according to a Variety exclusive.

But... why?

The film will be produced by Allen J. Schwalb and Bob Farnsworth, and will feature Karolyn Grimes of the original installment. Grimes played George Bailey's daughter, Zuzu, and was 6 years old at the time of the release in 1946.

Grimes told Variety that she has seen several scripts for an "It's a Wonderful Life" sequel and this script, written by Farnsworth and Martha Bolton, is the first that she thought could actually work.

The original film stars Jimmy Stewart as Bailey, a man facing hardship and contemplating suicide, who is then shown by an angel what the world would have been like without him.

Part deux will star a to-be-named unlikable grandson of George Bailey who is shown by Grimes (an angel) what the world would have been like if he weren't born. Sound familiar?

NBC will air the film on Dec. 14 and Dec. 24 at 8 p.m.

For more details on the film, slated to be released for the holidays in 2015, check out the full post on Variety's website.
