The Oscar Nominated Short Films 2014: Documentaries
This year’s five Oscar nominees for documentary short, presented in two programs at the Coolidge Corner, aren’t as strong a group as last year’s contenders, but they showcase bravery and spiky individualism in refreshing ways.
The shorts feature dying murderers, obsessive cave-diggers, the world’s oldest living Holocaust survivor, young protesters in Yemen wielding video cameras under government sniper fire, and a gay man whose best friend is the ex-skinhead who once tried to kill him. One way or another, these films are about the heroism of stubbornness—the urge to keep living, no matter what, recorded on film.
