200 Geneva Ave., Dorchester
"We called the cops to find out where you moved!" exclaimed the couple in line at the M&M Ribs truck — that's M&M for Maureen and Maurice — proprietors of an authentic roadside pit in Dorchester. Formerly on Columbia Road, but now located at 200 Geneva Avenue, the M&M is a BBQ gem, one that is worth sending out a search party to find.
"Big Moe" and his family serve up BBQ with down-home hospitality Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and 1 to 8 p.m. on Sundays. Their passion for BBQ is evidenced by careful pit tending and attention to flavor in all of the fare. A board with the daily specials would cause any BBQ lover to salivate. There are whole and half slabs, chopped pork, and mouth-watering jerked chicken, all served as dinners or a la carte. There's a lone picnic table for those who want to sit, but most orders are "to go."
We sampled the ribs, pulled pork, and jerk chicken, along with sides of red beans and rice, potato salad, yams, and mac'n'cheese. The sauce was light, tangy and had a good zip. The meat was tender and flavorful. The jerk chicken had a great balance of spices and just enough fire. The sides complemented the meats without competing. We recommend the red beans and rice. Desserts include homemade sweet potato pie, peach cobbler, and a delicious banana bread pudding.
We left feeling heavy in the belly, not lighter in the wallet (average $10/person). The Maverick Bar-B-Crew gives M&M Ribs truck 5 out of 5 horseshoes. Giddyup!
