A preview of new restaurants
PORTER CAFE 1723 Centre St., West Roxbury
Opened in June, Porter Cafe is the cozy spot every neighborhood needs. It’s decorated in dark wood and red paint, it dishes up comfort food that tops out at $18 an entree, and it has beer. Lots of beer - more than a dozen craft selections on tap, and 50-plus additional choices. Owners Paul Murphy and firefighter Dermot Loftus, both from Ireland, met working at Brookline’s Beacon Street Tavern. They know their pubs.
Chef Jimmy Whelen previously cooked at restaurants such as Tremont 647 and the B-Side. He’s put together a menu of classics with creative touches. It includes snacks such as fried pickles and pierogies; smaller dishes such as steamed mussels, fish tacos, and a fried shrimp po’ boy; and entrees such as roast chicken, risotto, and grilled pork chops.
For a quick burger and a beer or a leisurely dinner, West Roxbury residents have a new neighborhood standby.
