Another day, another upscale Mexican restaurant/tequila bar. Temazcal Tequila Cantina opened at Liberty Wharf in South Boston in mid-April. What differentiates it from other, similar concepts recently opened in Boston?
For one thing, chef and co-owner Todd Hall. To him, Mexican food isn’t simply the latest trend. It’s a long-term interest. The James Beard award winner was cooking at La Hacienda in Scottsdale, Ariz., back in the mid-’90s. Before opening Temazcal, he spent time in Mexico researching the country’s cuisine. (This may be part of the reason we’re seeing so many Mexican restaurants open: Chefs want an excuse to eat barbacoa, tamales, and mole in situ.)
It also doesn’t hurt that Temazcal is right on the harbor, with water views and a patio.
Temazcal is reportedly the first restaurant in the country to present its full menu on an iPad, and it certainly won’t be the last. The approach saves trees and lets diners access information about their antojitos and entradas. It will be interesting, at least, to see how the images on the iPad compare with what appears on the table.
The menu is lengthy. One might start a meal with lobster guacamole, squash blossom quesadillas, roast quail, or crab taquitos. Entrees include goat basted with grapefruit and molasses, chicken in mole poblano, and whole roast suckling pig carved tableside. The tequila list offers 300 selections.
Note to boaters pulling up to the public docks: Cabo Wabo and open water don’t mix.
