Wheeled from the kitchen on tall carts stacked with oversized trays, they're warm, savory, flaky pastry turnovers filled with chicken, ground beef, or salt cod. Once you've had one, you'll understand why people line up for them at the break of dawn. They taste richly buttery but contain no butter, just a little oil in the dough. The meats, seasoned with jalapeno peppers and Goya spices, marinate in their own juices. Because they sell so briskly, they're baked throughout the day, so they're always fresh. And they're cheap -- 74 cents for beef, 84 cents for fish, $1.25 for chicken. No wonder they sell like literal hot cakes.
