Taste Kitchen: Low-fat ice cream
With the weather warming up, then cooling down, then warming up, then ... well, whatever. We've decided it's ice cream season. But wanting to eat ice cream doesn't mean wanting to consume large amounts of fat. Could there be a light ice cream that would still taste rich, creamy, and satisfying? We decided to find out.
Globe staffers blind-tasted five light versions of vanilla ice cream. The winner, Breyers Light creamy vanilla, came the closest to full-fat taste. It had a fresh, true vanilla flavor without any strange afternotes. Häagen-Dazs and Edy's vied for runner-up, with Häagen-Dazs edging ahead by a drop. The remaining brands met with receptions cool enough to cause freezer burn.
