The singer-songwriter has toured extensively on her own and with folk duo the Story, though these days she stays closer to home. "Music is always in my head, but I'm mostly being a mom and studying landscape design at Harvard," says Kimball (above), a part-time horticulturalist. "It's a lovely way to keep the head 'free' while working outside and dreaming up songs, designs, novels." It costs too much to take a full band on the road, but at Kimball's Lizard Lounge residency she can play tunes from her lovely CD, "Oh Hear Us," and stretch out on swing tunes, ballads, pop songs, and new material with an adventurously rootsy quartet behind her. Her all-star crew includes Duke Levine (guitar), Kevin Barry (lap steel), Bill Beard (drums), and Dick Gates (bass). Guest shots are expected by Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst, Rose Polenzani, Anne Heaton, and Rose Cousins. Stick around afterward to hear Levine and Barry turn up their amps to play with Brennan, whose songs and band are among the best in the land. 21+ Free. 8 p.m., Wednesdays through November. Lizard Lounge, 1667 Mass-achusetts Ave., Cambridge. 617-547-0759. lizardloungeclub.com
