Simon Cowell's much-heralded return to American TV, the big-budget, hours-long talent search/Pepsi commercial that is the "X Factor," reportedly costs $3 million per episode but has lagged behind more low-key competitors such as ABC's "Modern Family." Sure, viewers are still intrigued and tune in to see the diverse crew of amateur acts from gutsy teen songbird Rachel Crow to MC/singer Chris Rene. But it's not the 20-million-viewer per week mania that his former gig "American Idol" inspires.
