Dr. Drew Pinsky, 55, the host of "Dr. Drew on Call" on HLN and a popular addiction specialist, has announced he was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago and had his prostate removed in July.

He made the initial announcement yesterday on a blog post on HLN. Then he talked about it last night on his show.

Why didn't he have surgery right away? He decided instead on a course of "watchful waiting." This is from his blog post:

I was pleased my doctor didnít want to rush into surgery. I certainly didnít want to. I wasnít in denial. My years of training and experience had taught me not to panic about prostate issues. Research shows 30 percent of low-grade prostate tumors get worse during a 10-year span. Thirty percent get better. Thirty percent stay the same.

Pinsky said heís announcing his condition to raise awareness about prostate cancer, reports the Associated Press.

"It's very common for men," said Pinsky on his HLN show. "It's highly treatable."

So how is he feeling today?

"I am proudly cancer free," Pinsky said.
