Miley Cyrus shocks celebrities, fans with VMA twerk performance
The word of the day? Twerk.
And if you don't know what it means, replay last night's VMA performance by none other than Miley Cyrus, who was joined by Robin Thicke for a duet of his hit "Blurred Lines."
Urban dictionary defines twerking as this:
The rhythmic gyrating of the lower fleshy extremities in a lascivious manner with the intent to elicit sexual arousal or laughter in ones intended audience.
And Miley Cyrus makes it look like this.
Twitter erupted during her performance, which she started as a solo act, with fans expressing everything from disgust to admiration for what some called a gutsy performance. (Photo by Scott Gries/Invision/AP)

(Note: Slate is reporting that the reaction from Will Smith and his children caught on camera was actually because of Lady Gaga's performance.)
NBC News is calling the Cyrus performance "embarrassingly raunchy."
Robin Thicke didn't seem to mind it (but many are wondering if his wife, Paula Patton, did). Here's what he tweeted:
That was dope. Shout out to @MileyCyrus @kendricklamar @2chainz #VMA pic.twitter.com/Lva7RV8tAG

As for Cyrus, she left the VMAs early (so she wouldn't have to explain, perhaps?), and tweeted this:
Leaving the VMAs. No it's not over. I'm no psychic but congrats @onedirection #songofthesummer
