All in the family

Mark Wahlberg is the 10th great-grandnephew of John Hathorne (1641-1717), a judge in the Salem witch trials, who was the great-great-grandfather of “The Scarlet Letter’’ author Nathaniel Hawthorne. That makes Hawthorne and Wahlberg fourth cousins, eight times removed.

Tom Hanks and Abraham Lincoln are third cousins four times removed. Abraham Lincoln is also a half-first cousin, five times removed to actor George Clooney (although Hanks and Clooney are not related).

Bill Gates has distant kinships to Princess Diana, the Bushes, and John Kerry.

Jennifer Aniston is related to John Quincy Adams and the Bush presidents via the Hoar family of Massachusetts.

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, the late actor Christopher Reeve, and chief justice William Rehnquist are all related to each other through their descent from Mayflower passenger and Plymouth Colony governor William Bradford.
