Hicks, other Idols to visit White House

President Bush will come face-to-face with the one man who has his voting record beat. Bush plans to host ``American Idol" Taylor Hicks and the other Top 10 finalists next Friday in the Oval Office. It will be the first time contestants from the hit television show have been invited to meet the president. Hicks won the most recent season's contest May 24 after 63 million votes were cast for him in the season finale. That's more than the 59 million that Bush got in 2004. Although, to be fair, voters can cast more than one ballot on ``American Idol." Hicks has a personal White House connection: Susan Whitson, Laura Bush's press secretary, taught him ninth-grade English at Hoover High School in Birmingham, Ala.

Quayle bolts Mellencamp concert
Don't expect Dan Quayle to attend another John Mellencamp concert. The former vice president, miffed by a comment Mellencamp made about President Bush's administration, walked out of the singer's July 14 show at Harvey's Lake Tahoe Casino in California. Mellencamp, unaware that Quayle was in the audience, introduced the song ``Walk Tall" by saying, ``This next one is for all the poor people who've been ignored by the current administration." Quayle, who was in town for a celebrity golf tournament, then made his exit.

Campbell arrested in London
Supermodel Naomi Campbell, 36, was arrested after allegedly causing a disturbance outside a former boyfriend's home, The Sun, a British tabloid, reported yesterday. The newspaper said police were called after Campbell arrived at the house in the early hours of July 10 seeking the return of some belongings. The Metropolitan Police confirmed she was detained for breach of the peace after ``reports of a woman causing a disturbance" in London's tony Belgravia district. She was released without charge several hours later.
