Jean Fain, a Harvard Medical School-affiliated psychotherapist, offers a new recipe for dieting that rejects simple calorie counting in favor of a wholistic approach to change the way you think about food and your relationship to it. Her method, which incorporates techniques such as self-hypnosis, breathing exercises, and visualizations, embraces the idea the achieving greater mindfulness in your eating habits. Fain will discuss “The Self-Compassion Diet” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Porter Square Books, 25 White St., Cambridge.
