Robert B. Parker
Boston-based mystery writer Robert B. Parker is 75 today.
Female British mystery authors are supposed to get to be distinguished old ladies: Baroness James (a.k.a. P.D) of Holland Park, Dame Agatha Christie, Professor Dorothy Sayers. But American guy mystery writers are supposed to remain lean and mean, leaping over fences in back alleys, escaping every mortal danger in their paths, capable of doing all the things their heroes do. They're not supposed to get to be 75.
Nevertheless, we're glad Parker did -- it beats the alternative, after all, and reminds me of something a feisty 75-year-old friend said to me recently: "I think of myself as being in late middle age."
We wish the author a happy day, and hope that he and Spenser never retire...
