The Boston Public Library doesn’t limit its holdings to books (pages bound together with writing on them), and for more than 160 years, the institution has been collecting maps, paintings, musical scores, posters, and more. At the yearlong, “Cool + Collected: Treasures of the BPL,’’ items include Winslow Homer’s “Eight Bells’’ etching and a draft sketch of Robert McCloskey’s “Make Way for Ducklings.’’ These are featured in Chapter 1, which runs through the middle of October (Chapter 2 through February, Chapter 3 through June). Today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (through June). Free. Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston St. 617-536-5400. www.bpl.org
