NORTHAMPTON -- Like most winners of a big prize, Jeanne Birdsall is bemused, stunned, and happy. But winning the 2005 National Book Award last month for her first children's novel, ''The Penderwicks," seems not to please her as much as bonding with her lifelong literary heroes.
